Garden design process

Whether you have a large open space or a small city garden, I take a thoughtful and personal approach to every project. My aim is to create spaces that feel like a gentle escape — places that reflect your personality and bring beauty throughout the seasons.

Each garden begins with listening: understanding what matters most to you and exploring the full potential of your space. Some projects involve designing an entirely new garden, while others may simply need a fresh planting scheme to breathe new life into an existing layout.

No two gardens or clients are the same, so I tailor the process to suit your needs. That said, most designs follow a few key stages, and I will guide you through each one with care, making sure everything feels clear, collaborative, and enjoyable from start to finish.

  • Hands of a person writing notes

    1. Initial consultation

The design journey begins with me visiting you at home for a relaxed chat about your garden. This is a chance for me to get to know you a little and take a look at your garden - how it feels, how it’s used, and what it might become.

You’ll talk through your ideas , any practical needs or challenges, and most importantly, how you’d like it to feel and function in your day-to-day life.

After this meeting, I will follow up with a further visit to take measurements and take a site survey and then send you a written brief outlining everything we discussed, along with a fee proposal and a clear breakdown of the next steps. Once you’re happy with it, the brief becomes the foundation for the design process moving forward.

    2. Planting Plan

Once the layout is finalised, I will create a detailed planting plan, showing exactly where each plant will be placed. Every choice is made with care—taking into account the soil, light, and the character of your garden, as well as your personal style.

At this stage, I can also support you in exploring ideas for pots, containers, or garden features that will add charm and individuality to your space.

    3. Choosing your landscape contractor

Finding the right person to bring your garden to life can feel a bit overwhelming — but don’t worry, I can help with this also.

Once the design is finalised, I can introduce you to trusted, experienced landscape contractors I have worked with before, who understand how to interpret and deliver a garden with care and precision. I will oversee their work and once they have completed the hard landscaping I can begin the planting.

    4. Planting your garden

Once the landscaper has begun work, I can move on to sourcing and planting your plants. I carefully select plants from a trusted network of local growers and nurseries, known for their high-quality specimens. Throughout the planting process, I oversee every detail to ensure your garden takes shape beautifully.

To support you in caring for your new garden, I can also prepare a simple, easy-to-understand garden care guide.

    5. Optional follow-up consultation and maintenance

After your garden is planted, I can offer optional follow-up visits to ensure everything is settling in as it should. These gentle check-ins allow me to assess plant health, offer seasonal care advice, and guide you through any early challenges, such as pests or dry spells. I can advise on pruning, soil care, feeding, and watering. This ongoing support helps your garden grow beautifully and naturally over time, evolving with you and continuing to bring joy throughout the seasons.
